Home Organization Myths Debunked
Home organization is not for the faint of heart and there is a lot of misinformation about it that needs to be cleared up. Growing up, I was not the organized person I am today. And to tell you the truth, I’m not completely organized. I don’t live in the spotless house. I have stuff out of place…I live in my home, but it’s organized enough for me. Our home is definitely not magazine cover worthy around here…it’s lived in.
I have a family…that likes to make messes.
I have a life….that keeps me busy and on the go.
BUT I have a place for everything and everything has a place. That is big key. When I first married my husband in 1999, I had no clue what organization was. I was the girl that had the mess under her bed when my mom said to clean it up. I was the girl that threw everything into the closet and shut the door. Within 5 minutes, my room was clean, but I paid for it dearly when my mom realized what I did because I had to clean it the right way. Most of the time it took me ALL DAY long to get everything back in order.
There were times, my mom would get fed up with my lack of organization skills and took everything that was out of place and put it in big trash bags and hide it from me. The only way I could get my stuff back was to earn it and/or find the hidden stash of my belongings in the garage. I thought I was being smart and didn’t realize how she knew I had my stuff back until I was WAY older. I guess I just didn’t put two and two together because I was a kid who just wanted her stuff back. I wasn’t asking for much! :)
Home Organization Myths Debunked
Before my organizing journey began in 2010, I believed the many myths that I had heard over the years. So I wanted to tackle 3 of the most common myths and break it down for you.
Home Organization Myth #1
You have to be born organized to live organized, right?
Wrong! You don’t have to be “born organized” to reap the benefits of an organized home. I learned the term “born organized” from my favorite organizing book called, “Sidetracked Home Executives: From Pigpen to Paradise“. It’s by far the best organizing tips book on the market.
My advice:
Take one room at a time and little baby steps and you too can enjoy the simplicity of being organized.
Home Organization Myth #2
You have to spend a lot of money to have the right kind of storage.
Wrong again! Storage boxes and organizing systems do not have to be fancy. You can find many items at your local thrift stores, garage sales, dollar stores, and even the clearance section of your local craft stores.
My advice:
Think about your space before you purchase anything and only make those purchases after you know what will be staying in the room you are organizing. You don’t want to spend money on containers that you don’t need because it doesn’t fit in your space. Make your organizing system work for you!
Home Organization Myth #3
It takes a lot of energy and motivation to get your home organized.
This is completely false. Getting your home organized is really only a matter of changing the way you do things and thinking differently about the excess items you own in your home today. You don’t have to jump in with both feet and start reorganizing every space in your home at once. Take small bite size pieces and you will see the benefits faster than if you tackle the whole house as one big project.
My advice:
Take your organizing journey slow and set time limits so you can stay motivated to finish the room you are getting organized.
In the coming weeks, I will be sharing a weekly challenge for you tackle your organizing projects around the house. It will include organizing tips and great products that will get you organized quickly. Each task should take about 15 minutes per day and over time you will see the benefits of setting up an organizing system that works for you.
What home organization myths have you heard that stop you from taking on the challenge of getting organized?
