Ketogenic Diet Benefits and Why It’s Good For Weight Loss
Looking for a weight loss program? Check out these ketogenic diet benefits. The keto diet plan is known to help many on their weight loss journey.
I am not a doctor, nor a nutritionist and I surely do not play one on TV. I am just a busy mom with some pounds to lose who has done a ton of research on this WOE (way of eating) and I want to share what I have learned with you.
Besides just basic weight loss the Keto diet brings a ton of other benefits that can improve your health all the way around. Here are what I consider the best ketogenic diet benefits.
Benefits of the Keto Diet
Reduces Your Appetite/Cravings
When you eat carbs your insulin spikes, this, in turn, causes cravings.
When you reduce your carbs and get them from healthy sources like fruits, veggies, and moderate dairy instead of processed foods you don’t feel those overwhelming urges as your blood sugar is leveled off.
Eating fat and protein keeps you feeling full and satisfied longer so you avoid that hungry feeling.
Improves Digestion
Keto eating reduces bacterial growth by eliminating sugar that feeds the bad bacteria in our gut. Eating quality meat and healthy vegetables in place of carbs reduces that bacterial growth.
Long Lasting Energy
Fat gives us a longer-lasting energy source than carbohydrates do. Without the sugar spikes and the inevitable sugar slump, our body runs on a more even keel and we are able to maintain energy much longer.
Dramatic Weight Loss
Low carb diets are shown to be more effective than low-fat diets and also weight drops faster. The higher fat diet keeps you full and you are less likely to cheat and have more success long term.
Of course, the psychological effect of getting a confidence boost from losing weight spurs us on to lose even more.
Stabilizes Mood/Regulates Hormones
Just like sugar spikes affect our health overall and energy stores they have direct connections to our mood and hormones as well.
Once we have sugar we need sugar to keep going and we are caught in a constant up and down cycle. This can cause mood swings. Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes are a result of too much sugar for much of our lives.
Improves Risk Factors for Many Diseases
Since the ketogenic diet tends to reduce body fat, HDL levels, blood pressure, and blood sugar your risks for many diseases are lowered.
Diseases like heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, cancer, Parkinson’s, IBS, PCOS, and cancer.
Improved Cognitive Functioning
Our brains need a steady supply of healthy fats to function properly, a keto diet gives us just that. Reducing sugar and increasing our Omega 3’s also helps improve cognitive ability.
Easy to Follow
Some diets are failures right from the beginning because there are so many rules and counts to keep track of. While keto does have a basic formula it is mainly a game of increasing fats and protein while minimizing carbs-easy to stick to!
Decreases Inflammation in Your Body
If you have a lot of inflammation in your body keto is a great way to reduce it. Sugar is an inflammatory and removing it from your diet reduces blood sugars and in turn reduces inflammation, increasing adenosine, our body’s natural analgesic (pain reliever).
DISCLAIMER: As with any diet, always check with your doctor before starting a new plan.
While the ketogenic diet is considered somewhat controversial, it is a less restrictive plan with good sources of natural carbohydrates and some doctors have researched it so they understand how it works.
